US National Security Adviser calls on PM Lee

SINGAPORE Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong received a call by United States National Security Adviser H R McMaster in Washington DC on Tuesday afternoon (Wednesday morning, Singapore time).

During the call, they spoke about regional and international developments, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.

"Both sides exchanged views on the threat of terrorism in the region and expressed concern about the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's continued development of its illegal nuclear and ballistic missile programmes," the PMO said.

"They also agreed on the importance of the US' continued commitment towards deepening its engagement of the Asia-Pacific," the statement added.

Also present at the meeting were Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) S Iswaran, and Second Minister for Defence and Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung.

Mr Lee is on a six-day visit to Washington that began last Saturday. On Monday, he met US President Donald Trump at the White House. The two leaders also witnessed the signing of a major deal worth US$13.8 billion for Singapore Airlines to purchase 39 Boeing aircraft. THE STRAITS TIMES
