WHEN she wrote her first column for The Straits Times as a university graduate 32 years ago, it was only the tip of the iceberg.

Now the executive editor of Singapore's most-read English title, Sumiko Tan is a household name among readers.

She first joined the paper in 1985, fresh out of the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a degree in English language and English literature.
