Saving plastic bags
WHO knew that plastic bag rebates could make such a difference? According to NTUC FairPrice, over nine million plastic bags were saved and more than S$450,000 in rebates were given out last year through its Green Rewards Scheme. The initiative encourages shoppers to choose reusable alternatives - customers who bring their own bags when they shop at FairPrice are rewarded with a 10 cent rebate, with a minimum purchase of S$10.
The Green Rewards Scheme was first launched in 2007. Since then, FairPrice has given out more than S$2.3 million in rebates, resulting in an estimated 46.5 million plastic bags saved. FairPrice has seen a 10 per cent year-on-year increase in plastic bags saved at its stores.
