Allure of old Burgundies
Vintages that are savoured at their peak are irresistible, writes NK YONG

Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru Malconsorts 1978, Domaine Lamarche
A mature medium-hued dark brown-red, with a beautiful aroma of mature Pinot Noir, a full perfume of over-ripe strawberries, peaches and a touch of citrus. Overwhelming! On the palate the taste of very ripe berry fruit, well concentrated, very complex and fresh, even youthful. Very long. A beautiful wine, still at its peak notwithstanding its 36 years of age.
