Minimalism for the masses

STEVE Reich may be best known for being one of the key pioneers of the minimalism movement, but the composer isn't too thrilled with the label himself.

He said: "It's not my job to give it a name, but I've got a much better word to describe my compositions. Do you have your dictionary at hand? It's called 'Music.' "

The 79-year-old will be in town on March 17 to perform a one-night-only concert with English contemporary chamber orchestra London Sinfonietta, with whom he has played a few times before. This will be their first performance in Singapore together.
