IN the 1967 movie Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn play an urbane liberal-leaning couple who nonetheless get a shock when their grown-up daughter (Katharine Houghton) brings home her new fiance - a good-hearted medical doctor who happens to be a Negro (Sidney Poitier).

Prejudices emerge and faultlines are revealed - before a happy Hollywood ending wraps everyone in a warm 1960s Technicolor embrace.

Something similar happens to a family in Pangdemonium's pitch-perfect comic-drama Tribes. But this family dispute has nothing to do with race, and the consequences are much more heartbreaking that one might expect.
