Since it was first performed by the Singapore Dance Theatre in 1999, Giselle has been steadily polished to be a jewel in the crown for the company. Now the classic ballet is set to be staged for the first time at Singapore's biggest performing arts stage, the Esplanade Theatre.
Giselle tells a tragic but beautiful tale of a peasant girl who dies of a broken heart when she discovers the man she loves is engaged to another. After she dies, spirits of angry dead virgins raise her from her grave and urge her to taunt her lover to his death. But her great love for him rescues him from such a fate.
Created in 1841, Giselle is mostly memorable for its sepulchral and supernatural scenes, reaching a crescendo when the spirits attempt to override Giselle and kill her lover anyway.
