Yayoi Kusuma is well known as one of the most successful living artists in the world with her signature bright and happy dotted art works. But the reality behind the red-haired artist whose shows easily command blockbuster-movie crowds is a different story.
The 2018 film, Kusama: Infinity, explores how the artist overcame countless odds, including the trauma of growing up in Japan during World War II; life in a dysfunctional family that discouraged her creative ambitions; and sexism and racism in the art establishment, to bring her radical art vision to the world. Directed by Heather Lenz, the film kicks off the eighth edition of the Design Film Festival, which has been bringing films on design and its subcultures to audiences. DFF2019 will be held in Septmeber with more films to come.
Kusama: Infinity will screen on June 22 at Capitol Theatre. Tickets from designfilmfestival.com.
