Yeng Pway Ngon is one of Singapore's most prolific writers, having published 26 volumes of poetry, fiction, essays and more. He's won the Singapore Literature Prize three times and received the Cultural Medallion. But if you're unfamiliar with his famous novels such as Art Studio (a hefty 584-page opus) and Unrest, you can get a faster introduction to his writing through his collection of short stories titled The Non-Existent Lover And Other Stories.

Beautifully translated from Mandarin by his wife Goh Beng Choo, the collection marks his journey and development as fiction writer, from the veiled social critiques of the 1960s and 1970s, to the experimental micro-fiction of more recent times. Some of these stories are gems, proving why Yeng at 70 remains one of our most compelling and important writers.

The Non-Existent Lover And Other Stories is available in bookstores.
