Venice Ship Returns
Helmi Yusof
Zai Kuning's ghost ship returns to Singapore after showing at the 57th edition of the Venice Biennale. The artist's 17-metre-long skeletal ship is made of rattan, string and beeswax and harks back to the long history of the Malays in South-east Asia. The ship, together with other artworks, explores the ethnogenesis and migration of Malays in the region.
Titled Dapunta Hyang: Transmission of Knowledge, the homecoming show at 72-13, home of TheatreWorks, will be accompanied by public programmes such as weekly guided tours, live performances by Zai and collaborating musician Mike Cooper, talks by archaeologist John N. Miksic and art historian T.K. Sabapathy, as well as the screening of a new film that depicts Zai's region-wide search for historical answers.
