Winning fashion statement: it's really quite ephemeral

FASHION can often be worn to make political statements and it was the perfect vehicle for artist Yom Bo Sung, 21. His "Gunny Stack" was a reminder that the latest and most desired fashion often still ends up being given away. Yom's sculpture bagged the top prize in the BAZAAR Singapore Art Prize this year.

Organised by Harper's BAZAAR Singapore for the second year, artists were given the concept "Fashion Meets Art". Twelve were shortlisted and Yom's topped the Sculpture category and won the overall prize. Here, he's put together clothes like a newspaper stack, alluding to the fact that fashion, like newspapers, are attention-grabbing and mass produced, but ephemeral. The representation of Singapore fashion is that fashion is often given away.

Other winners in the categories include: Shin-Young Park for the 2D Work on Canvas category; Desiree Liew for the Photography category; and Ieo Gek Ching for the 2D Work on Paper category. Works were as varied as a 3D-printed boned corset made to look like honeycomb, to a canvas filled with hidden messages.
