Exposing the inner workings of sound
TO create his sound works, Singaporean sound artist Zulkifle Mahmod uses integrated circuits within sculptures and installations. Now, he's creating sound sculptures by exposing such integrated circuits that are normally all closed up and tucked away unseen.
For his first solo exhibition in three years, and in a rare gallery show, Zulkifle is using wires like a sculptural form, while they are still functional as sound works. The additional touch is wiring them to light sensors for the interactive element.
"The approach is more sculptural and it's sound-based so what you'll see are metal pieces soldered carefully together," he explains. For his exhibition, he will have nine wall-hung sound reliefs, four standing sculptures, a sound installation and sketches.
