Frustrating the audience
WHEN you walk into David Chan's exhibition, Context, expect to walk out feeling a little frustrated. At least, that's what the artist hopes will happen.
To him, frustration is an emotion that goes beyond anger and curiosity. So if his works manage to evoke that in his audience, then it would be considered his "highest achievement".
"The worst thing someone can feel is indifference. So any kind of strong emotion is a good response. Not understanding something will result in indifference, not frustration. So frustration is wanting to know something but not being able to - a bit of confusion and inability to satisfy one's need," says the 35-year-old.
