All-Star Hamlet
The Prince of Denmark gets a dark and moody update in this Mandarin version of the classic Shakespeare play. Director Li Liuyi, one of China's leading theatre practitioners, commands a star-studded cast that includes Hu Jun (of Red Cliff fame) as Hamlet and Pu Cunxin as King of Denmark. Costume designer William Chang (of In The Mood For Love fame) dresses the cast, while renowned set and lighting designer Michael Simon envisions a stylish rotating wooden platform as the set. The Tragedy of Hamlet tells the story of a young prince who suspects that his uncle may have killed his father in order to marry his mother and ascend the throne. It is arguably Shakespeare's best play.
The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by Beijing Li Liuyi Theatre Studio runs from Feb 15 to 17 at the Esplanade Theatre. Tickets from Sistic.
