New Opera Singapore takes its name seriously. Instead of staging the standard Puccini or Verdi title, it's injected new zest into the Singapore opera scene with less mainstream works by the likes of Monteverdi, Poulenc and Purcell. Its latest production is A Midsummer Night's Dream adapted from William Shakespeare by Benjamin Britten. It tells the classic story of four young lovers and a group of travelling actors who enter a magical forest and are manipulated by mischievous fairies. As mistaken identities and physical transformations become the order of the day, hilarity ensues. Staged in English, the show is expected to highlight local vocal and musical talents.
A Midsummer Night's Dream runs on Aug 16 and 17 at the Victoria Theatre. Tickets from Sistic.
