COULD Journey be unwittingly writing the soundtrack to its own career all this time? Since forming in 1973, the American rockers have gone through ups and downs, as well as difficult line-up changes.
Starting off as Santana's backing band, it broke out on its own as a jazz fusion act with little commercial appeal. Cue Don't Stop Believin', its 1981 chart-topper which a younger generation of fans discovered after it became the unofficial theme song for TV's Glee.
The anthem, of course, figured its way into the set-list of Journey's show last Friday at The Star Theatre, alongside a string of radio-friendly hits (and the odd deep cuts) the band has chalked up through the last four decades. It was a crowd-pleasing trip down memory lane for the fans - one which almost hides the fact that Journey's road to success has been anything but smooth sailing despite the ease with which it seems to crack the music charts.
