ONE of the most recognisable voices in pop music is headed our way. Sonny Turner, lead singer of The Platters, is set to serenade fans of the legendary rhythm and blues doo-wop group with his honeyed vocals at a special Mother's Day concert this weekend.
The 78-year-old is the only surviving member of the original Platters. He joined the group in 1960, taking over vocal duties from lead singer Tony Williams after the latter left to pursue a solo career.
"It was the opportunity of a lifetime for me - to be chosen out of more than 100 singers who auditioned to be the lead singer of one of the most famous and internationally renowned vocal groups," reminisces Turner.
