Walking Among Shophouses

They have colourful and ornate facades, and are commonly found in Joo Chiat, Geylang, Chinatown and Little India. Shophouses have existed in Singapore for more than a century and are an integral part of our history.

Russian photographer Tatyana Kildisheva's fascination with Peranakan heritage and shophouses - especially their eclectic design and vibrant colours - began when she moved to Singapore in 2013. She started taking pictures of shophouses and Peranakan tiles, creating collage designs for each neighborhood, and selling them as artworks.

Using the photos she took over the past four years, Ms Kildisheva published a book, Singapore Shophouse Walks, the first in a series of three containing photographs of shophouses in Joo Chiat, Katong and Geylang.
