IN the tradition of dystopian tales like Blade Runner and 1984, Teater Ekamatra's new play Paradise conjures a post-apocalyptic world populated by factory workers slaving away to produce a new form of energy to sustain their lives.

Written by award-winning playwright Zizi Azah Abdul Majid, the play raises fundamental questions about the nature of humanity. "When the world is broken and fractured, that is when our character and integrity are truly put to the test," she explains.

Zizi, whose plays include How Did The Cat Get So Fat? (2007) and The Gunpowder Trail (2011), says she is fascinated by the post-apocalyptic genre. Her current obsession is the zombie TV series The Walking Dead, in which a ragged band of humans struggle to stay alive from zombies.
