Known for more than just their monogrammed leather goods, global luxury house Louis Vuitton unveiled their men's Fall/Winter 2017 collection in Paris on Jan 20.

Kim Jones, Louis Vuitton Men's Artistic Director, said: "It's uptown and downtown. Artists and musicians, friends and heroes." The clothes are an ode to the variety of styles that colour the streets of New York City, spanning three decades: the seventies, eighties and early nineties.

Inspiration came from Manhattan artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, a group whose creative strengths and signatures allowed for collaboration.

Though the fabrics showcased are gratifyingly luxuriant - think silk, cashmere, vicuna and alligator - all cut into genuine utilitarian shapes, the New York state of dress appears to be a silhouette of relaxed elegance. Fans of skinny jeans, look elsewhere. Loose coats, raw-cut in cashmere flecked with threads to imitate paint splatters or woven with hairline strips of leather, are presented with fils coupe pyjamas.

The notion of collaboration is itself at the heart of the collection. The New York City staple, street clothing retailer Supreme and Louis Vuitton have fused for the first time to create a capsule collection of clothing, accessories and jewellery - shown alongside the luxury brand's own.

Mr Jones says: "No New York City men's conversation is complete without Supreme."

A new Monogram variation is interrupted with Supreme's iconic box logo and used in a range of garments from classic pale washed Japanese denim and camouflage jacquard to a cognac and chocolate colour way referring to the original 1896 Monogram canvas.

Archive styles and techniques have also been revived for this collection, lending some credence to the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The accessories from the Supreme collaboration feature the jacquard camouflage toile combined with Louis Vuitton's natural cowhide leather; others like backpacks and duffel bags feature Epi red and black, embossed with Supreme logotypes like adhesive stickers.
