With a bullish expansion that includes openings in Malibu and Ibiza, chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa has finally brought his hotel brand to London with a much-anticipated launch in the city's hipster neighbourhood, Shoreditch. The five-storey building is dramatic with cantilevered steel beams on the outside, but inside, calmness prevails. Local firm Studio Mica has dressed the concrete and glass space with a quiet, Japanese aesthetic that includes slatted shoji screens and watercolour walls by Hackney-based artist Sichi. On the ground floor, the Nobu restaurant and bar - the third in the city - is headed by Greg Seregi, who serves up a typical menu peppered with favourites such as black cod miso or yellowtail with jalapeño.
