Beware the 'Ides of March': last chance to stop Trump

If the Republican front-runner wins all or most of the races on Tuesday, that would provide him enormous momentum and could drain the energy from the campaigns of his party rivals

"BEWARE the Ides of March," a soothsayer warned Julius Caesar in William Shakespeare's famous play. On his way to the Theatre of Pompey on March 15 in the year 44 BC, Caesar passed the seer and joked: "The ides of March have come," indicating that the prophecy had not been fulfilled, to which the fortune-teller replied: "Aye, Caesar; but not gone."

And, indeed, Caesar was stabbed to death at a meeting of the Senate in the theatre that day, with many as 60 conspirators, led by Brutus and Cassius, involved in the assassination. That proved to be a turning point in Roman history and its transition from a republic into an empire.

Since Caesar's assassination, the expression "Beware the Ides of March" has forever imbued March 15 with a sense of foreboding, warning us that we should prepare for earth-shattering events to take place on that date. So what about those crucial presidential primaries that could determine the sha…
