WHEN real estate magnate Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign last year by lashing out at illegal Mexican immigrants and promising to act tough against Muslim terrorists, his nationalist message seemed to be working.

In San Francisco, California, a pretty young girl, Kate Steinle, was shot to death in July 2015 by an illegal immigrant, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, who had seven felony convictions, igniting huge public outcry.
