UN should lead global search for new energy sources

JAPAN and US have pledged a total of US$4.5 billion to the United Nations' US$10 billion Green Climate Fund (GCF). If the 200 countries can give on average US$500 million each, the GCF will have US$100 billion. The UN should use the fund to set up a centralised research organisation to gather top scientists with technical expertise and material resources to find new sources of green, clean and unlimited energy resources for the sake of mankind as soon as possible.

The UN mission should not be limited to research in solar, wind, current and hydrogen power. It should research the extraction of geothermal power, the tapping of lightning and the transfer of power from outer space. All these untapped sources of power are unlimited, but are beyond the present level of science and technology to harness effectively. Not many countries can lead the search for new sources of energy by taking on the oil and gas majors on their own, due to a lack of financial resources and technological expertise. The oil industry is expected to protect its vested financial interests at all costs and will fight back against any attempts to make fossil oil obsolete.
