China has overtaken America to be the world's biggest economy, while the White House continues to be preoccupied, if not obsessed, with the mess in the Middle East.

According to the IMF figures, the Chinese economy is now worth US$17.61 trillion compared with US$17.4 trillion for the US. And China's economy will be worth around US$26.98 trillion in 2019, or 20 per cent bigger than the American economy, which the IMF economists are forecasting to be worth US$22.3 trillion five years from now.
