Brooklyn's hotel boom causing concern

Demand may not be enough to fill glut of rooms as supply in nearby Manhattan also surges

The average hotel occupancy rate in Brooklyn fell 1 percentage point in the first five months to 76.8 per cent, while average room rates slipped 2.9 per cent to US$155.71, according to STR Inc.

ABOUT one kilometre north-west of Brooklyn's Barclays Center, a 202-room EVEN hotel is rising next to a Holiday Inn that opens in October. Two blocks over, a tower for Marriott International Inc's Autograph Collection is under way.
