THE Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has launched for sale via public tender, five land plots in Lim Chu Kang and Sungei Tengah for vegetable farming.

It is the seventh tranche of farmland for tender since 2017, in line with the “30 by 30” vision to sustainably produce 30 per cent of Singapore’s nutritional needs by 2030, said SFA on Thursday (Oct 5).

Two of the land parcels are located in Neo Tiew Harvest Link, with each land area of about 20,250 square metres (sq m). The other three adjoining parcels in Sungei Tengah Road have land areas between 20,000 sq m and 20,300 sq m.

The farms are for growing leafy vegetables, fruited vegetables and mushrooms.

SFA highlighted that proposals that can achieve sustainably high production levels will have a higher chance of getting the land parcels.

As less than 1 per cent of land is set aside for agriculture food production in Singapore, local farms need to leverage technology and innovation to increase productivity, as well as to stay sustainable and resilient against climate change, the government agency noted.

“Every proposal will be assessed on its merits, in terms of production capability, track record, relevant farming experience and qualifications, as well as innovation and business sustainability, which includes the exercising of best farming practices.”

Wong Sheau Fong, SFA’s senior director of food infrastructure development and management division, said that the land tenders are tailored to support promising farms with feasible and concrete plans for sustainable food production.

“SFA will work with farms, including successful tenderers in the land tender exercises, to transform our agri-food industry and bolster Singapore’s food security,” she said.

The tender for all five land parcels – which have a 20-year lease period, with the option to extend for 10 years – will close at noon on Dec 7, 2023.
