Tokyo: Shares open sharply lower on Wall St losses

[TOKYO] Tokyo shares opened sharply down on Tuesday, following a weak lead from financial markets in Europe and on Wall Street after oil prices resumed their downward slide.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 2.23 per cent, or 381.21 points, to 16,729.17 in opening deals, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares dropped 2.02 per cent, or 28.17 points, to 1,364.46.
