Tokyo: Shares rally in opening trade ahead of BOJ decision

[TOKYO] Tokyo shares rallied at the start of trade on Thursday as investors awaited the outcome of a closely watched policy meeting by the Bank of Japan later in the day.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose 0.86 per cent, or 148.50 points, to 17,438.99 in opening deals, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares gained 0.89 per cent, or 12.35 points, to 1,396.65.
