Tokyo: Stocks end the day lower

[TOKYO] Tokyo stocks closed lower Tuesday as a strong yen hit exporters and banks while Toshiba soared nearly 20 pe rcent on news that a fund led by a well-known activist had taken a new stake in the troubled conglomerate.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell 0.59 per cent, or 118.95 points, to 19,999.91 while the Topix index of all first-section issues was down 0.31 per cent, or 5.00 points, at 1,620.48.
