[TOKYO] Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Thursday following a heavy sell-off on Wall Street that knocked hopes of a sustained turnaround on global financial markets.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange tumbled 3.11 per cent, or 551.41 points, to 17,164.22 in opening deals.
