Tokyo: Stocks rise sharply in opening deals

[TOKYO] Tokyo shares opened sharply higher Tuesday, following modest gains on Wall Street as trading resumed after a long weekend.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange jumped 1.27 per cent, or 212.50 points, to 16,937.31 in opening deals, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares gained 1.11 per cent, or 14.94 points, to 1,359.99.
