US: Stocks open higher as Intel buys Altera for US$16.7b

[NEW YORK] Wall Street opened with solid gains on Monday helped by Dow blue chip Intel's $16.7 billion deal to buy rival chipmaker Altera.
After sagging last week, five minutes into trade the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 66.66 points (0.37 per cent) to 18,077.34.
The broad-based S&P 500 added 5.32 points (0.25 per cent) at 2,112.71, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index rose 18.67 (0.37 per cent) at 5,088.69.
