STARTING Wednesday, consumers can use GrabPay - the mobile wallet solution by Grab - to pay at 25 hawker stalls, restaurants and retail shops in Singapore.

The 25 merchants - among them bakery restaurant chain Cedele, hipster cafe My Awesome Cafe and modern bar Sum Yi Tai - form Grab's first batch of merchants that now allow consumers to make payments via the Grab app.

To pay, consumers simply tap the GrabPay button on the top right, tap on "Pay", scan the QR code displayed by the merchant, key in the amount payable and slide the navigation bar to send the money to the merchant.

Grab announced on Wednesday that it would launch the GrabPay service across South-east Asia in 2018. It also reiterated that it would have onboard 1,000 merchants - comprising hawkers and small businesses - in Singapore by end-2017.

Tan Hooi Ling, co-founder of Grab, said: "We're focused on helping cash businesses go cashless, giving them access to new customers in an affordable way."
