WHEN experts from around the world gathered in this city on Okinawa Island over the weekend to discuss the brave new world of cyber society and cyber security, it was at times a cross between science fiction and a horror movie - a combination of present reality and future shock.

Spectres were conjured up of possible cyber attacks that trigger chaos in everything from nuclear power installations to air traffic control systems or other cyber "infrastructure", that could turn self-drive cars into rogue machines or even threaten "wars".
