[SAN FRANCISCO] Alphabet Inc pulled Google's 5-year-old think tank under its corporate umbrella and renamed it Jigsaw.

Jigsaw also will become a technology incubator and will be led by Jared Cohen, a close confidant of Alphabet Chairman Eric Schmidt. Mr Cohen ran Google Ideas, the company's in-house think tank that used technology to give people greater security and confidentiality when communicating online, among other tasks, Alphabet said in a statement.

"The team's mission is to use technology to tackle the toughest geopolitical challenges, from countering violent extremism to thwarting online censorship to mitigating the threats associated with digital attacks," Mr Schmidt said Tuesday in a blog post announcing Jigsaw.
