[SINGAPORE] The police will soon be given greater powers to maintain public order in Little India once a new bill is given the go-ahead by Parliament.

This temporary law, which will last for a year, will allow police and other government agencies to enforce alcohol restrictions and regulate the movement of people in the area.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean introduced the bill in Parliament yesterday after detailing the events of last month's Little India riot and the measures that had been put in place in its aftermath.
