Call for govts to avoid over-regulating aviation
Liberal policies tend to benefit the sector as a whole
[SINGAPORE] While governments need to play a strong role in regulating safety and security in the aviation industry, they should avoid over-regulation when it comes to other areas of the industry, said Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew.
Noting that governments with air hub ambitions need to adopt a different mindset, Mr Lui said: "A liberal regime brings more choices and more competitive fares for the citizens, and enhanced connectivity enhances the proposition of cities in international business."
In contrast, restricting traffic rights could hurt domestic carriers in the long run if passengers opt to fly via other airports.
