Adjusting to difficult times
Amid weak global economic conditions and structural changes in the maritime sector, MPA and PSA have implemented help measures for container lines
LAST week's column touched on the parlous state of the container-shipping industry. It so happened that it was published on the same day the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) issued a statement on its performance last year.
The MPA said that the Port of Singapore had put in a mixed performance in 2015, amid weak global economic conditions and structural changes in the maritime industry.
The good news was that advance estimates showed that vessel arrival tonnage grew 5.6 per cent, and Singapore remained the world's top bunkering port, with a 6.5 per cent increase in volume of bunkers sold.
