AIR India has officially been accepted as a member of the Star Alliance, and passengers of the world's largest grouping of carriers can expect the benefits and privileges to kick in from July 11.

The move comes three years after the alliance had suspended the entry of the loss making state-run carrier.

Air India was originally accepted as a future member of Star Alliance back in December 2007, but the integration process was suspended in July 2011 to allow the airline to focus on completing its merger with Indian Airlines before fully integrating it into the alliance network.
