THERE is good news for Asian shipping in general, and Singapore in particular, in the latest Shipping Confidence Survey from international accountant and shipping adviser Moore Stephens.

While overall confidence levels in the shipping industry fell slightly during the quarter till May this year, due to concerns that overtonnaging could hit freight rates, confidence levels in Asia remained stable. Moreover ship managers were slightly more upbeat - and, of course, Singapore is a major ship management centre.

Even looking at the global scene, confidence levels remain at their second-highest in the past six years. The survey found that expectations of new investment were maintained over the three-month period, but the prospect of higher freight rates softened in the tanker and dry bulk sectors.
