DHL to boost operational efficiency with new S$140m facility at Changi
DHL Express has launched a S$140 million automated facility within Changi Airfreight Centre which will enable it to triple its cargo handling capacity and process shipments six times faster.
The 23,600 square metre facility, which is kitted out with an automated express parcel sorting and processing system, is 33 per cent bigger than DHL's previous facility. In addition, its new South Asia Hub will enable some export shipments to be sent directly to the hub, bypassing its service centre. This will cut down on travel and shipment handling time.
Speaking at the opening ceremony on Tuesday, Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang said: "The South Asia Hub is a good example of how technology can enable logistics firms to achieve significant productivity gains. For instance, the hub has an advanced material handling system that increases maximum cargo-handling capacity by more than five times, and enables labour productivity gains of over 30 per cent compared to the previous facility."
Frank-Uwe Ungerer, senior vice-president and managing director at DHL Express, added: "The increased efficiency allows us to look into streamlining our service centre operations in Singapore from end to end, giving our customers even faster deliveries and better business efficiency."
This is DHL's largest investment in Singapore to date.
