Will shipowners fulfil their obligations under this unilaterally imposed EU measure or reject it, which was what the aviation industry did?

MOST ships of all flags will very soon be hit by a new cost when operating in EU waters, if the world's shipowners comply

Over the past couple of weeks press releases have been coming in thick and fast from classification societies and other auditing companies. They have all been reporting accreditation allowing them to carry out assessments and verifications for compliance with the European Union's Maritime Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (EU MRV) regulation.

This new requirement has been in the works for some time, actually coming into force back on July 1, 2015. At the time it was said that coming into force then would "ensure that the member states and relevant stakeholders have sufficient time to take the necessary measures for the effective application of this regulation before the first reporting period starting on 1 January 2018".
