IN a move that intrigued transport players here, South-east Asia-focused GrabTaxi will open an engineering centre in Seattle to build a dedicated engineering team in the United States, where rival ride-booking platform Uber is based and has engineering and research facilities in San Francisco and Pittsburg.
The new centre - slated to open this month - will complement Grab-Taxi's existing research and development (R&D) centres in Singapore and Beijing, and develop capabilities in machine learning, cloud computing, big data management and predictive analytics, the self-styled "hyperlocal" ride-booking company announced on Thursday.
