SINGAPORE has joined a number of countries that have indicated their willingness to participate in the pilot phase of the carbon offset and reduction scheme for international aviation (Corsia) that will be put to a vote at the upcoming International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Assembly. ICAO is a United Nations specialised agency.
The voluntary phase for the long-awaited global market-based measure will start from 2021, before becoming mandatory from 2027. Besides Singapore, those involved - namely the US, China, Canada, Indonesia, Mexico, the Marshall Islands and 44 European countries - collectively account for a significant proportion of global air traffic. However, some of ICAO's other member states are still said to be hesitating.
