Tokyo

THE government is planning legislative measures to make it easier to provide, mainly to Japanese car makers, video footage of traffic accidents recorded by event data recorders installed in vehicles and street security cameras.

The aim is to allow car makers to utilise the footage to improve self-driving technologies, over which international competition is intensifying. Footage such as that of accidents is essential to improve the safety and accuracy of self-driving vehicles, and the government aims to support technological development.
