Crossover star

FOR something that is supposed to be in the compact SUV segment, the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class doesn't really look much like a sport-utility vehicle. For one thing, this crossover with the three-pointed star isn't that tall and looks more like a high-riding hatchback.

But in terms of styling, the GLA-Class is striking. Sharp lines, sculpted contours and large wheel arches give it an aggressive stance. This is what the A-Class would be if it were bigger and more macho (both share the same platform). But look past the visual drama to appreciate the GLA's harmonious proportions. It is so well-balanced that its big 19-inch wheels do not look outsized. It may be a big hatch but it doesn't look it.

There are three engine options for the GLA-Class - the GLA200 with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine and the GLA200 CDI with a 2.2-litre turbodiesel - both front-wheel-drive - and the all-wheel-drive GLA250.
