JUST LIKE THE Stamford Raffles story, another familiar tale speaks of Sang Nila Utama - he who spotted a lion when he first landed on Temasek, describing it as having a red body with a black head and white breast, extremely agile and of great strength.
The incident was immortalised in the Malay Annals Sejarah Melayu, a literary work about the origin, evolution and demise of the Malacca Sultanate.
Pages from a handwritten copy of Sejarah Melayu are now on display in a special exhibition at the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC). Seekor Singa, Seorang Putera & Sebingkai Cermin: Reflecting & Refracting Singapura presents multiple perspectives and fresh insights into the history of Singapore all the way back to the 15th century.
