Another Matter
As digital technology steadily reduces our reliance on paper, will we have any use for it in the future? Aloft at Hermès' latest exhibition, Some Other Matter, sees Indonesian artist Irfan Hendrian explore this issue as well as how technology has impacted man's relationship with the material. The industrial printmaker uses paper as construction material to replicate tools, machines and even buildings, to represent obsolete publishing houses and spaces in Bandung, Indonesia, which once enjoyed a rich heritage of industrial printing. Besides making a statement on the impact of technology, Irfan also believes that paper will not be abandoned. This exhibition challenges us to rethink the ways in which it has served us, and how it will continue to play a part in our lives.
Some Other Matter by Irfan Hendrian runs until Oct 13 at Aloft at Hermès, 541 Orchard Road, Liat Towers
