Nanyang Memories
The musical Memoirs Of Nanyang tells a cross-generational tale of an immigrant who leaves China for Singapore, falls in love with a Malay woman and learns to embrace a bicultural Peranakan lifestyle. The production by Siong Leng Musical Association boldly fuses nanyin music, Malay songs and Mandarin pop to present a portrait of Singapore that's deeply diverse and distinct.
Commissioned by the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre to kickstart its annual Cultural Extravaganza arts fest, Memoirs Of Nanyang features the creative collaboration of three Cultural Medallion recipients, namely photographer Yip Cheong Fun, nanyin musician Teng Mah Seng and choreographer Som Said.
Memoirs Of Nanyang plays at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre on May 25 at 2.30pm. Tickets from Sistic.
